Common Fiber Questions

What are the different type of Fiber Optic Cables?

Fiber Optic cable is broadly divided into Singlemode and Multi-mode cable. Multimode fiber comes in two core sizes: 50-micron and 62.5-micron and has a large-diameter core and multiple pathways of light.  Single-mode cable provides roughly 50 times more distance than multimode cable and used to connect buildings or premises. Single-mode cable has a small 8–10-micron glass core and only one pathway of light.

What type of Fiber optic do I need for my business?

Fiber being reliable and less susceptible to attenuation, can tranmit data beyond 100 meters which Copper cannot do. Most small and mid size businesses would use MM or Multimode, technically within a building should be multimode. Single-mode cable, with its higher performance, is more commonly used
in campus networks between buildings.

Why Fiber Cabling is better than Copper?

Fiber optics has many advantages over copper wiring. Fiber these days is inexpensive and you can build much longer point to point links using fiber than is possible with conventional data cables, the bandwidth is much wider, it is lighter and it occupies less space. Besides being light, fiber does not get affected by electrical interferences.

How Fiber can be used for Digital video and audio?

Digital video is often transported over long distances using fiber optics. If audio is embedded in a digital video bit stream, it will be automatically transmitted over a fiber optic link along with the video. This applies to SDI at 270Mb/s and HDSDI at 1.485Gbps.

What is Attenuation?

The reduction in optical power as it passes along a fiber, usually expressed in decibels.  An Attenuator is used which is a device that reduces signal power in fiber optic link by inducing loss.

What is the difference between Riser & Plenum-Rated Fiber?

Riser Fiber or PVC cable has an outer polyvinyl chloride jacket that
gives off toxic fumes when it burns. It can be used for horizontal and vertical runs, but only if the building features a contained ventilation system. Plenum can replace riser, but riser cannot be used in plenum spaces.
